It was discovered by Krisztián Sárneczky and Szabolcs Mészáros at the Piszkéstető Station in the Mátra mountains of Hungary on November 3, 2003. It is named after Frigyes Karinthy, a Hungarian author, playwright, poet, journalist, and translator of the 19th and 20th centuries.
